Golden Arrow bus commuters can travel with some peace of mind after the police made a breakthrough and nabbed SEVEN alleged skelms who have been targeting the buses.
Provincial police spokesperson, Captain FC van Wyk, said Thursday the suspects were arrested on Monday
following an intense investigation.
In recent months, skelms have targeted several Golden Arrow buses, robbing commuters of their personal belongings.
Van Wyk says the suspects, between the ages of 19 and 33 years, were arrested in Lingelethu West, Philippi East and Khayelitsha.
Last week, a
commuter in Lingelethu died after he was shot when he resisted robbers.
Van Wyk says some of the suspects were found in possession of the stolen items.
He says the suspects appeared in court on Wednesday.
“Since December 2018, several robberies were perpetrated on buses, which led to the establishment of a task team to investigate all cases in this regard.
“Detectives investigating the robberies of commuters on Golden Arrow buses in the Lingelethu West, Philippi East and Khayelitsha areas have made a breakthrough and arrested seven suspects on Monday, 20 May.
“All seven suspects, aged between 19 and 33, have appeared in the Philippi Magistrates’ Court and will be remanded in custody until 30 May for a bail application.
“Property stolen during some of these robberies were also recovered.
“More suspects are sought in connection with these robberies as well as the murder on 15 May,” Van Wyk added.
