Hundreds of hungry people in Kraaifontein and surrounds received a hot meal over the weekend.
Bottelary Primary School Deputy Principal Louisa Claasen says most of their pupils live on surrounding farms and would have received a meal if school was running.
But, being at home under lockdown meant they sometimes have nothing to eat as many parents are unemployed.
“For most of them, this is the only meal they receive for the day,” she says.
The hot food and parcels, provided by the Peninsula School Feeding Scheme, was distributed with the help of the C-Max security company.
Carla Lourens of C-Max Security says: “On Tuesday we are going to bring more food.
“We would love for more kids on the farms to join us at the feeding scheme here.”
PREPARATION: Food parcels
But, Maria Mitchell, 42, a mom of one, says: “Some kids stay very far from the school, in the vineyards, so I collected 14 food parcels to take to different farm houses.”
On Sunday, religious leaders handed out lekker akni on a field in Scottsville.
Imam Mogamat Jubyer Miller says he was approached by sister Winnie Benecke to help the poor.
“So on Sunday, the pastors and bishops joined us to feed the people. The Covid-19 virus has brought us together to work as one team.
“A big thank you to Rasta Abe Maritz and Shaun Mcdonald who were the biggest role players in the feeding scheme.”

Bishop Robert Nata said: “I take my hat off to Imam Miller, they are uniting this community.”
Conway Adams, a grateful dad of two, says the kos was “ lekker”.
