The men and women, who have volunteered to keep Mitchells Plain’s streets safe, have been blessed with food parcels thanks to the Community Chest.
The Community Chest donated 900 food parcels to neighbourhood teams and street committees in Tafelsig, Portland, Rocklands, Eastridge and Beacon Valley.
Ashley Potts, the deputy chairperson of the Mitchells Plain Community Policing Forum, says the crimefighters volunteer their time and many have been hard hit by the Coronavirus lockdown.
The parcels were handed over to Ward Councillor Eddie Andrews who distributed it.
Potts says: “We have close to 5000 families which includes neighbourhood watch members and street committees who need food parcels and the number is growing.
“The volunteers do not get a stipend. We have checked on our database which ones are unemployed.
GRATEFUL: Ashley Potts
“The food parcels were donated by the Community Chest and can feed a family of four for two weeks.”
The parcels contain peanut butter, sugar, toiletries and pasta and other staples.
Potts says: “We applaud the donors because this makes a difference in the lives of those in need.”
He says they also want to thank Mitchells Plain Trailer Hire who provided four vehicles and trailers to distribute the parcels.
Erifaan Saalie, the Rocklands sub-forum chairperson says: “We appreciate these parcels. We also gave the parcels to the elderly, the oldest was a 94-year-old woman.”
Community Chest spokesperson Desiré Goliath said: “We collected 900 boxes of basic groceries which was a partnership between Pick * Pay Plumstead.
“Covid-19 shows the reason why we exist and what we were born to do”.
