Police believe they have caught a runner for alleged drug kingpin Fadwaan “Vet” Murphy red-handed with a kilogram of tik worth R100 000.
Members of the Lentegeur Crime Prevention Unit were carrying out a stop-and-search in Aloe Street on Monday when they spotted the suspect carrying a green plastic bag.
Cop sources say as the 28-year-old man ran from cops, he tried to hide the drugs in a car, a grey Honda, which allegedly belongs to Murphy’s sister, Glenda Bird.
Police say he tried to run away, and jumped over a wall into someone’s backyard to escape.
But he was nabbed soon after and police allegedly found him in possession of one kilogram of tik, with a street value of R100 000.
The suspect was expected to make his first appearance at the Mitchells Plain Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday on a charge of possession of drugs.
Top police sources say the man is “a known criminal working for Murphy”.
Police spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk says: “Members chased after the suspect and caught him in possession of 1000 packets containing 1 gram of tik each, estimated at R100 000.
In the meantime, Murphy and Bird who were recently arrested, have legal worries of their own.
Last month Murphy, Bird, his ex-wife Shafieka Murphy, Leon Paulsen and Dominique Davidson heard they would be facing 236 charges relating to money laundering, dealing in drugs and racketeering at the Khayelitsha Priority Crimes Court.
Prosecutors believe Murphy is the mastermind and head of one of the biggest drug dealing operations on the Cape Flats, after R5 million worth of tik and R1.1 million in cash were found at a drug lab in Lotus River last year, where Shafieka was arrested.
They are back in court in November, while prosecutors indicated their pre-trial proceedings would start in January 2017.
