Cheslin Kolbe has scored plenty of times onder die pale at Newlands — and now he has scored a bride-to-be.
The Western Province and Sevens rugby star surprised everyone when he proposed to his stunning meisie, Layla Cupido, after WP’s victory against the Boland Kavaliers on Friday, and she said yes!
Following the 30-28 win, which saw WP secure a place in the Currie Cup semifinals, there were more celebrations to come as teammates and fans watched Kolbe go down on bended knee to pop the big question.
The 22-year-old from Northpine says he wanted to ask Layla to marry him at Newlands, as that is where they had first met in 2013.
“We had played a Currie Cup game against the Xerox Golden Lions, and after the match I noticed a beautiful girl in a red hoodie coming down Boundary Road outside DHL Newlands,” he recalls.
“She stopped myself and [teammate] Kurt Coleman, because her friend wanted to take a photo with us, and I have been in love with her ever since,” he said.
Kolbe added that Newlands feels like home to both of them, which made it the perfect venue to propose.
“Layla is love of my life, and I wanted to propose to her at a place that holds a special place in both our hearts,” he says of his pretty fiance, who recently graduated as an accountant.
Team captain Juan de Jongh took to Twitter to congratulate the lovebirds, tweeting: “congrats julle twee” followed by an emoji of a bride and a church.
Kolbe’s Olympic champion cousin Wayde van Niekerk didn’t send a message himself, but retweeted other messages of congratulations.
