Cape Town City will be looking to maintain their watertight defence when they head to Bethlehem to face Free State Stars in the PSL on Wednesday night (7.30pm).
Coach Benni McCarthy’s manne have been super stingy this season, conceding just two goals in five games across the league and the MTN8 and have shipped no goals in their last three matches.
After their most recent shutout in the 1-0 MTN8 semifinal first-leg win over Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday, Benni hailed his charges.
He said: “I’m very happy that we kept a clean sheet. It’s not an easy game. Sundowns is the best team in our land. They’ve got the best players and make life difficult for you.
“When you have a game of this magnitude and you keep clean sheet you have to praise your players.
“The effort the players gave, they gave everything.”
It’s been quite an achievement for the Cape side, with Benni relying on youngsters like Keanu Cupido and Kouadja Kouassi to man the defence.
Two men who have been instrumental in the consistency at the back are centreback Taariq Fielies, who also scored the winner at the weekend, and new goalkeeper Peter van Leeuwenburgh.
They face a Stars side who are desperate to get back to winning ways after losing their last two matches.
