Liverpool extended their perfect start to the season
as they won 2-1 at Tottenham on Saturday to go three points clear at
the top of the Premier League.
Georginio Wijnaldum and Roberto Firmino scored the goals to send
Liverpool clear of Chelsea and Watford, who play later Saturday.
Eric Lamela pulled one back in injury time to give Tottenham hope but
Liverpool held on to go top on their own.
"That was very, very good," Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp said. "It
was an intense job to do and the boys did it.
"We deserved to win that game today. Over 85 minutes we were really
dominant. That was our best game of the season and the performance
was much better than the result."
Tottenham hammered Liverpool 4-1 in the corresponding fixture last
year but Klopp's team were good value for their win.
Wijnaldum headed Liverpool in front late in the first half - a goal
awarded by goalline technology - and Firmino scored from inches out
nine minutes into the second half after good work from Sadio Mane.
Lucas Moura hit the outside of the post at 2-0 but Liverpool had a
host of chances to extend their lead, especially through Mohamed
Salah and Mane.
Lamela scored with a well-struck volley after Liverpool failed to
clear a corner but Liverpool held out to make it five wins out of
five.
Tottenham, who won their first three games, remain fifth, six points
behind Liverpool.
