Benni McCarthy must be cursing his luck after hailing Ayanda Patosi and watching his ace waste three goalscoring chances in Cape Town City's goalless PSL draw with Golden Arrows on Saturday.
The boss singled out attacking midfield star Patosi, who he called “probably the best player we have in South Africa in terms of quality”.
However, by the end of the first half, the Cape-born star should have had his team ahead.
The most glaring miss was in the 32nd minute, when Patosi failed to hit the target after being picked out by skipper Thami Mkhize on the edge of the box.
But before that City could have scored through defender Kouadja Koussai, while Taariq Fielies could have snatched the win late on.
And a frustrated Benni says: “I know we say it’s early days, but my gosh, you can’t have possession of the game, do all the right things and when you get in front of goal, we simply just not there.
“We weren’t clinical enough. It’s like we didn’t have the chances to put the game away.
“It’s three points lost to us.”
Benni, though, admits that it could have been worse than just a point as the crossbar saved them in the first half and Danny Venter’s late miss.
The Bafana Bafana legend adds: "The positive is that we didn’t get hit by a sucker punch like last season.
“At least we have a point and not zero. I’ll take that."
