Hosts Japan stunned Ireland 19-12 in an extraordinary upset on Saturday to win their second match of the World Cup and give themselves a strong chance of reaching the knockout stages for the first time.
The Brave Blossoms came from behind to beat a side recently ranked number one in the world in a shock to match their victory over twice world champions South Africa at the 2015 World Cup.
It was Ireland that got on the scoreboard first when flyhalf Jack Carty found the dangerous Garry Ringrose with a pinpoint crossfield kick for the first try on 14 minutes and a dink over the top seven minutes later put Rob Kearney in.
Yu Tamura knocked over a penalty in-between the two tries.
Japan then had Ireland on the ropes for the remainder of the half, leading to two more Tamura penalties to make it 12-9.
Kenki Fukuoka sensationally gave Japan the lead with 20 minutes to go, with Tamura slotting over his most difficult kick of the night to make it 16-12 and then stretched the lead to seven points eight minutes from time.
Of the win, Japan coach Jamie Joseph says: “We have been focusing on today for basically... well the last year at least but probably sub-consciously for the last three years and Ireland have been thinking about it since Monday.
“So we probably had an advantage in that so we just had to execute properly.”
