What a bombshell was dropped on South African rugby and the Springboks over the weekend after it came to light that Aphiwe Dyantyi tested positive for a banned substance.
The 2018 World Rugby Breakthrough Player of the Year obviously requested that a B sample be tested and one can only hope for this sample to prove the innocence he pleads.
But boys, doping is a real problem in rugby and especially South African players.
Just thinking back over the past few years, we’ve also had Chiliboy Ralepelle and ex-Western Province player Gerbrandt Grobler banned after they were found guilty.
There’s also Ashley Johnson, former WP player, who tested positive while in England last year.
Closer to home, Durbanville High School’s Director of Rugby lost his job earlier this month after it was revealed that he helped a player to get him on the juice. Ai boys.
I really hope the 24-year-old Dyantyi’s B sample comes back negative and that there is a good reason why the A sample tested positive.
If it doesn’t, though, I’m afraid he will find it tough to recover his promising career after this.
