KILLED: Leni Gouws

A man who allegedly killed his wife in a parking spot on a scenic route, allegedly did it because he couldn’t accept the fact that she was leaving him.

According to relatives JJ Gouws turned the gun on his estranged vrou, 55-year-old Lenie Gouws.

Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk says the shooting took place on Friday afternoon on Clarence Drive outside Gordon’s Bay.

“The circumstances and motive surrounding is under investigation,” says Van Wyk.

The suspect was on the run but was nabbed on the N2 outside Grabouw.

According to Nenna van Rensburg, sister of Lenie’s first husband who passed away in an accident years ago, Lenie and the suspect have been separated since November.

“She started divorce proceedings but he couldn’t accept it,” explains Nenna.

She adds that Lenie took her only son’s car to meet her ex on Friday.

“But she hid it from us. We tried calling her but her phone was off,” she explains.

The 55-year-old Gouws appeared in Strand Magistrates’ Court yesterday on a charge of murder.

Nenna says she became very emotional when she saw the suspect in court.

“I didn’t know if I should assault him. But we also have to think of his three children who are going through pain as well,” she adds.

The suspect will remain in jail until his next appearance on August 29.
