Its was happy hour for Eagle Park residents on Saturday when hijackers abandoned a truck filled with beer right on their doorstep.
Three video clips of the looting incident went viral on social media over the weekend, showing a crowd of men and women carrying crates of beer off the South African Breweries truck.
Even passing motorists stopped and parked on Strandfontein Road to fill their boots with stolen dop.
NOT 'LITE': Beers carried
Grassy Park station commander Colonel Dawood Laing says officers were alerted to the incident shortly after 4pm and arrived to mense looting the SAB lorry.
“The driver was nowhere to be found and when they arrived, they found people carrying away crates of beers,” says Laing
“It was like Christmas for the residents of Eagle Park, but it was not only my people, even people passing the area in their cars took the opportunity to steal.”
In one of the videos, a man is heard warning residents that they have been caught on camera , but this does little to deter them: “Smile for candid camera! There you go live on Facebook! Let the whole world see you are stealing.”

Another person is then heard shouting: “ Vanaand is julle dronk, dik gen***”.
The person filming the video captures clear shots of the looters’ faces as well as the registration of their vehicles.
Laing says officers discovered that the truck had been hijacked on the N2 earlier that day.
“The truck was in fact hijacked and the driver went to Lingelethu West SAPS to register the case,” he says.
“It is not clear what was stolen from the driver yet, as the truck was filled with alcohol and then dumped on Strandfontein Road.
“The looters did not manage to empty the truck as police arrived on the scene.
“Grassy Park officers contacted SAB and they arrived to collect the truck and took it to the Ottery depot.”

Laing warns that Grassy Park cops will hand over the video evidence, which may lead to those involved in the theft being prosecuted.
“They should have called the police, not loot the truck, and all of them are guilty of theft.
“We will hand over the videos to Lingelethu West as they are investigating the case and everyone captured stealing can be prosecuted.”
