The Grassy Park community has been rocked by the murder of a suspected gangster outside an Engen garage by two masked gunmen in broad daylight.
The brazen shooting took place on the corner of Fifth Avenue and First Road just after 4pm on Saturday.
A Daily Voice source said: “The man they shot is a gangster here in the area and he was shot by a rival gang while coming out of the shop at the Engen garage.
“This is a very busy intersection and at that time of the day, there are a lot of people driving around or walking around the area, so anybody could have been hit.
“These varke must stop thinking the area is their playground, for them to just come and shoot and catch on s***.
“We’ve had enough of this, our people cannot even go outside without being worried about being robbed or worse.”
Grassy Park SAPS’ Colonel Dawood Laing of the Grassy Park Police says the shooting is gang-related, however he could not confirm which gang the 38-year-old was affiliated with, as it is part of their investigation, which is yet to yield arrests.
“The victim stays in the area and it looks like he was followed to the store and was shot while coming out by two masked suspects who fled the scene,” he says.
“About 15 shots were fired and the victim was struck in the head and back; he was declared dead on the scene.”
Another male resident said he was on his way to the shop when he saw the men approach the victim and had to run for cover.
“You just heard the shots going off and the people outside all ran away,” he explains.
“Anybody could have been shot by the shooters and even when the guy fell on the ground, they shot him a paar times in the back before they ran away.
“I heard from the people inside the shop that they were on the ground and some were hiding behind the shelves and the till.”
