The Mitchells Plain man who was mauled by Rottweilers has been declared brain dead, while the two dogs have now been put down.
Gabriel Lindy, 45, was attacked at his friend’s home on 5 June and on Tuesday his family was informed that he is not going to make it.
His sister Natasha Baartman, 39, tells the Daily Voice: “On Monday the police came to us and said the doctors were looking for us and when we called the hospital, we were told that he will not make it.
“And on Tuesday we were told to visit him, he looked very bad.
“I could see in his eyes that he is gone already, but we are waiting for the call that will tell us that he has passed.”
The Tafelsig man was taking his friend’s daughter home and he apparently didn’t realise that there was no one at home when he opened the gate.
An eyewitness, Chrishando Simons, 40, says: “I heard him shout and when I got to the yard, one dog was already biting him and the other was going after the baby he was carrying.
“So I grabbed the baby and left her outside the yard and went back to get the dog off Gabriel.
“But then the second dog was also biting him but we managed to get him out of the yard.”
The owner of the dog, who did not want to be identified, says he had to put the two Rottweilers down.
“I have been told about Gabriel’s condition and I will have to pay the costs incurred,” he says.
“I only kept the dogs for my family’s safety not to harm other people.
“I took the dogs to the vet to put them down after the incident.”
