I shouldn’t be so cynical, but it does strike me as just a little suspicious that the world’s most powerful four leaders have paid attention to us in the past six weeks.
Russia’s Vladimir Putin came to visit and so did Xi Jinping from China.
Recently Donald Trump tweeted about our land ownership plans, and last week Theresa May was here to come make nice before Britain exits the EU.
She needs trading partners to ensure Britain remains solid.
So looks like Brexit may end up being beneficial for Africa after all! Who would have thought?
But I can’t help wondering why these powerful world leaders are suddenly paying attention to us, and in most cases, even cosying up to us.
What is it that we have that they want?
I think I know the answer. It’s access and influence.
In the next few decades, more than a quarter of the world’s consumers will live on the African continent.
That’s a massive market than no capitalist powerhouse can ignore.
And with South Africa in a highly-respected and strong position, it’s wise to come knocking on our door first.
Now if only someone can let May (and future visiting Western leaders) know that while they may have all the money, we still own all the dance moves.
