A two-month-old baby has been snatched out of a taxi and police’s family violence, child protection and sexual offences (FCS) unit in the Western Cape need your help to find the little boy.
Cops have launched a manhunt for a woman who pretended to be a social worker when she snatched Kwahlelo Tiwane from his mother in Parow last
Thursday.
The mother of the twin babies had been approached by the suspect, who introduced herself as a social worker at the mother’s home in Khayelitsha last Wednesday, police spokesman Colonel Andrè Traut explains.
“She asked for the baby’s birth certificate, clinic card and she made herself copies,” says Traut.
“The suspect returned the next day and accompanied the mother and the children in a taxi to Parow, where she told the mother where her office was.
“After stopping at the alleged office, the suspect got out of the vehicle with the one twin and fled with the child.”
The circumstances surrounding the kidnapping of the child were being investigated and the assistance of the public would be appreciated so that the mother can be reunited with her child, Traut added.
Meanwhile, the director of the Missing Western Cape Missing Persons Unit (WCMPU), Candice van der Rheede, is urging residents to look out for any woman who suddenly has a new baby.
This woman may or may not have pretended to be pregnant.
It is also possible that the snatcher may have given the baby to someone else by now.
APPEAL: Van Der Rheede
“People should be on the lookout for somebody they know who’s never had a child that all of a sudden has a brand-new baby,” she says.
She adds: “Be very careful of who you give your child to. When people approach you wanting to see your baby, please, you need to ask for proper identification.
“If you’re not sure, just turn around and walk away. Today, you can’t trust anyone.”
Anyone with information or know the whereabouts of the boy can contact Detective
Sergeant Joy Sumsodien of the Bellville FCS on 082 522 1095 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
