A day after a robbery at Spur at Vangate Mall in Athlone, armed robbers have hit the McDonald’s restaurant situated opposite the mall on Jakes Gerwel Drive.
The skelms made off with cash, leaving frightened staff in their wake, on Tuesday at about 1:30pm.
According to a staff member, two armed men came in and gunpointed two staff members, demanding cash.
The men took an undisclosed amount of money from the tills.
Nobody was shot or injured during the incident and one boef stood guard to make sure none of the customers intervened.
Customer Quinton
Samuels, 45, from Heideveld, says he was sitting in the corner across from the tills and watched the incident unfold.
He says he was amazed when he heard noises at the till and watched the exchange, ducking behind a seat.
“The men were both in black and had on dark peak caps. They did not hurt anyone, but it looked like they got away with a lekker amount of geld,” Samuels says.
A man who identified himself as a manager said he could not comment on the robbery, but that they had reported it to the Athlone Police Station.
“We cannot comment on this, but we were robbed at gunpoint (on Tuesday) afternoon during lunch hour.”
Police spokesperson Siyabulela Malo said
on Wednesday that the Athlone police had no record of the
incident yet.
