This Kensington woman is determined to help the poor and needy but is pleading for assistance to help keep her going.
Velia Davids, 53, has been feeding 150 children and pensioners in the Kensington, Maitland, Vasco and Goodwood areas for the past five months, using money from her own pocket.
“I know what it’s like to go to bed on an empty stomach,” she says.
“People, especially children living on the streets and informal settlements, are hungry and I have made it my mission to feed them. I would like to feed everyone regularly, but unfortunately I can only provide bread daily and food once a week.
“The money to buy the ingredients come out of my and my husband’s pockets. These children didn’t ask to be in this situation and a helping hand could help spread hope.
HELP IN KIND: Velia Davids
“I am also busy making the Guardians of the Galaxy lunch boxes. The Guardians is a non-profit organisation under whose banner I work.
“The lunch boxes are for those children who do not have anything to eat in the afternoon. We start dropping the lunch boxes by 11.30am at schools,” Velia explains.
She says she’s not looking for any monetary donations.
“I don’t want any money from people. If anyone can donate bread, peanut butter, items we can put on the bread as well as ingredients for food, I would really appreciate it.”
