Authorities say a vegetation fire which has been ravaging the slopes of Table Mountain and Lion’s Head since Sunday afternoon was possibly caused by arsonists.
Over 200 firefighters were deployed to fight the flames in the howling Southeaster, leaving six of them injured.
Five private vehicles and a fire engine were gutted in the fire, while panic-stricken residents and hikers had to be evacuated from Table Mountain, Camps Bay, Lion’s Head and Signal Hill.

The City’s Fire and Rescue Services spokesman, Jermaine Carelse, says the blaze was finally contained on Monday morning with 30 firefighting appliances and over 230 firefighters still on scene.
“Six firefighters were injured and taken to hospital. The incident was divided into five areas in order to be more manageable.
“Table Mountain National Parks and Working on Fire (WOF) are also assisting.
“Several structures have been affected and motor vehicles destroyed in the fire.
“One firefighting appliance was unfortunately lost in the blaze,” Carelse said.

Mayco Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, applauded all involved in containing the fire.
“The City tips its hat to the many agencies who have worked tirelessly to contain the vegetation fire that broke out below Tafelberg Road on Sunday afternoon.
“At its peak, the very strong southeasterly wind bedevilled efforts to contain the fire.
“The wind has abated somewhat and has allowed for aerial fire support.”
Smith says witnesses have come forward with video footage that suggests that the fire was started by someone.
