Ten families were left homeless after a blaze destroyed their homes in Marikana, Philippi, on Sunday.
There is no electricity in the area and residents suspect that a candle or stove that was left unattended might have caused the fire.
Nontaba Tshemesi, 57, who lives with her 16-year-old grandson, says they lost everything and have no one to help them rebuild, especially now as the weather is turning.
“The fire started in the house in front of us and we could not save anything. I ran for my life.
“My grandson cannot go to school now because he has no clothes,” says the crying gogo.
She said her grandson’s parents passed away and they are living off social grants.
DESTROYED: Fire ripped through Marikana
“I do not know where our next meal will come from, let alone assistance to build the house.”
Those who were quick enough to salvage a few items like Sibonelo Kholiwe say he was lucky.
“It was windy and I tried my best to get some important documents and a few clothes.
“It will be difficult for most people to rebuild because people are not working and are relying on social grants,” he says.
The City’s fire and rescue spokesperson
Jermaine Carelse confirmed the fire.
“The incident occurred around 6.28pm on
Sunday, 8 March.
“Several informal structures were destroyed and a number of persons were displaced. No injuries or fatalities were reported.”
