The newly established Parkwood Community Choir is trying to encourage youngsters in the gang-ridden area to stay away from crime, and to this end, they will be hosting the community’s first ever family fun day on Saturday 23 December.
John Beam is one of a select group of leaders in the area who started the Parkwood Choir earlier this year to keep the youth off the streets.
He says Parkwood has made news headlines for all the wrong reasons, including the murder of Hyde Park Primary pupil Ezra Daniels, 7, who was shot in the neck during a drive-by shooting in September.
“The Parkwood Community Choir was called into being as a support structure for our children, youth and adults. We are open to the entire family,” says John.
“Our aim is to ensure that our children have a safe place where they can creatively and musically express themselves and at the same time keep them off the streets.”
John says the aim of the fun day is to take back their streets this festive season.
“We want to take over the streets in December ensuring a safe and peaceful festive season for our children, with open air concerts, Christmas choirs and coons walking our streets. We would like to see these events happening throughout the Cape Flats and encourage other communities to get on aboard,” John added.
The community will be entertained with fun activities throughout the day, from 9am.
People can look forward to a concert, soccer and netball tournaments, as well as the Mr and Mrs Parkwood beauty pageant.
