Hundreds of Cape Flats kids were left with happy hearts and huge smiles after the Ottery Boyz MCC held their annual Christmas Convoy over the weekend.
Toys, food and party packs were handed over to more than 1500 children in Ottery and surrounding areas by the biker club on Saturday.
About 150 bikers, several bakkies and even a truck formed part of the convoy, all stacked with new and used toys and other donations which they’d collected over the year.
According to former captain and the founder of the Ottery Boyz, Keith Blake, most of the donations came from a collection drive which was recently held via Cape Talk radio.
Blake says the convoy, now in its eighth year, was started solely for the “benefit and the blessing of the poorest of the poor children in our surrounding areas of Ottery”.
Donations were received from the public, businesses and other organisations.
“Due to these kind persons the convoy was loaded with hot dogs, chips, sweets, party packs and new and second-hand toys,” he says.
“The convoy members handed donations to about 1500 children at Sasol Garage in Ottery, the Lansdowne Corner Shopping Mall in Hanover Park, informal settlements in Philippi, Ottery and in Parkwood.
“At Parkwood, Pastor Phillips, a community leader, prayed to God for the residents. The comments of thanks from the community leaders and parents in the -mentioned areas were overwhelming.”
