A boy has been stabbed at Manenberg High School after a fight broke out between two groups of pupils and community members linked to gangs.
On Monday, Jessica Shelver, the spokesperson for Education MEC Debbie Schafer, confirmed that the pupils involved in the fight would be suspended in order to secure the safety of staff and children.
Members of the police’s Anti-Gang Unit were called to the high school on Monday morning after the pupil was stabbed.
The injured boy had jumped over the school fence and ran away.
No criminal case has been reported to police.
Shelver says the drama started after a gang incident at the weekend, causing community members and school children to come to school armed on Monday.
“Our Safe Schools call centre has indicated that there was an alleged gang-related incident in the community over the weekend which spilled over to the school this morning,” she explains.
“This morning (Monday) a number of learners and community members came to school with knives and other weapons. A fight broke out and a learner was allegedly stabbed. The learner then reportedly jumped over a fence and ran away.
“Things are under control at the school and the gang unit is at the school to monitor the situation.”
Shelver confirms the parties involved will be suspended: “The two groups of learners that were involved in the fight will be suspended immediately to ensure learner safety.
“Counselling will be provided as required.”
