A woman dropping off her husband at work made a shocking discovery when she found the body of a dead baby in an open drain.
The body was found on the corner of Boesak and Botfontein roads in Wallacedene just before 7am on Thursday.
Mom of three Fiona Beukes, 37, says she thought it was a doll in the drain and got a skrik when she realised it was in fact a child.
“I was walking my husband halfway to work and on my way back, I noticed something funny in the drain, which did not have a cover on,” she explains.
“Because we walk this way every day, we know the drain is always covered, but on this day it was open. There’s always a lot of children playing on this spot.
“I looked inside the drain and I saw something looking like a doll.

“People who noticed me looking at this came closer to check also and that is when we realised it was not a doll at all, but a dead baby.
“I could not tell whether it was a boy or girl but the umbilical cord was still attached and the head was very big and swollen.
“I immediately called the Kraaifontein police.
“I am very shocked and sad that a mother could dump her baby like this.
“How can you go through the pain of birth and then do such an evil thing?”
Police did not respond to queries about the incident.
