A Lwandle football club is taking care of its players and supporters during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Helderberg Rovers is giving R2000 food vouchers to 120 people which include players and loyal supporters of the club.
Club Chairman Cameron Madolwana said they approached their sponsor, a private donor from Europe, who was kind enough to give them the money.
“People are not working, they are at home due to this virus,” he says.
“We had to act; this was to also show that as a team we care about our players and their families and we went to them at the right time during the pandemic.”
Parent Nontando Matoni had tears of joy.
Her 10-year-old son Simbongile is goalkeeper for his team at the club and hilariously kept screaming that he must now be considered a “breadwinner”.
“I am so happy right now, I thank the team he is playing for,” says the mom.
“His older brother is using drugs and we have given up on him. Simbongile is our only hope now and he likes football.”

Chairman of the Helderberg Football Association, Mzukisi Madondile, says he is very proud of the club’s leadership.
“As they say, ‘charity begins at home’. I hope all the other teams will follow this good example.”
Coach Eric Sabole said he now hopes parents will take them seriously now.
“We are not a professional football team, for now, but there is something we can do for the community.
“Players are not wasting their time when they play on the field, we create relationships.”
