Council workers fixing a burst drain got a skrik when they found a foetus floating in the sewage water on Monday afternoon.
Shortly after 1pm, a large crowd gathered at a veldjie behind the Delft Sportsfield after the tiny body was spotted.
Children and parents walked through the dumpsite as filthy water continued to gush over the foetus as council workers looked for a
lappie to cover it.
A council worker, who asked not to be named, said: “It came out of this drain and you can smell this is from the toilet, so we think somebody somewhere in Delft flushed it down the toilet. We covered it because all the children are coming now to look”.
Police spokesperson, Captain FC van Vyk, says Delft police were called to the scene at 12.40pm where the foetus was found.
“Upon their arrival on the scene, they found the body lying amongst rubble and water on an open field in Liesbeeck Street, Leiden.
“The members of the City of Cape Town sewerage department informed the police members that they were busy inspecting the drains and replacing the drain covers when they saw the infant or foetus floating on the water that was coming out of the drain.
“A post-mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death.”
Police have opened an inquest docket and are requesting anyone with information about the incident or the identity of the mother to call Delft police on 021 954 9011 or you can call Crime Stop on 08600 10 111.
