The two men charged with the murder of seven-year-old, Emaan Solomons was absent from the Simonstown Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday. They were scheduled to appear for a further investigation hearing.
Eben Basson, 27 and Chivargo Fredericks, 20, are accused of shooting the little girl while she was playing in her front yard in Ocean View on 25 February. A stray bullet struck her in the chest and hand while she stood in Libra Way.
In what was no longer than a five-minute hearing, Magistrate Van Eeden concluded, the case will again be postponed to 14 August 2020 for further investigation.
"In the case of the State vs Eben Basson and Chivargo Fredericks, in the absence of the accused here today, the case has been remanded to the 14 August 2020 for further investigation," said Van Eeden.
The State is still set to prove that the men are affiliated with the 27s gang, the Junkie Funkies.
It is believed that during the gunfire between their gangs, Basson and Fredericks allegedly shot and killed Emaan and wounded a male person.
Ocean View ward councillor, Patricia Franke says that the gang violence in Ocean View continues to persist.
“The gang violence in Ocean View is rife right now and innocent people and children keep falling victim. The family’s life of Emaan is completely messed up now. The shooting is still going on.”
VICTIM: Little Emaan
She continues, “My cry is that we keep the perpetrators behind bars. We also need to depend on each other in the community, that if we know who the perpetrators are, we come forward and speak out. It could save another life,” says Franke.
Emaan’s father, Azmir Oosthuizen, says the true reckoning will be done before Allah (God).
"They will have to answer in the court of Allah (God). That's where they'll be dealt with. Thanks to everyone who's been following my daughter's case," says Oosthuizen.
