Eureka Estate residents are demanding justice for a special needs teen who was bashed to death with a brick and left bleeding in the street over the weekend.
Angry residents say mentally disabled Quwan Leeman, 17, was allegedly murdered by a well-known drug addict and skelm in their community who has been on the run since Sunday.
His heartbroken mother, Joyce, says she last saw Quwan on Friday night and he told her he was going to a party with friends.
“He went to his friends and I know he sometimes has a drink, but he doesn’t use drugs or anything like that,” she says.
“He was a bit slow at school so we put him in the Bishop Lavis School of Skills.
“On Saturday, I was asleep when they came to call me and told me he was lying in the road. When we got there, his head was bashed in and the brick was lying next to him.
“They rushed him to Tygerberg Hospital and the doctors had to cut him out of his clothes. They found his ribs were also broken and his brain was swollen so bad they could not operate.
“They stabilised him and he was in ICU. On Sunday they had to put the machines off.”
According to a resident, who asked not to be named, Quwan returned home in the early hours.
“I don’t know what happened, but I saw the guy approach him and I don’t know if he forced Quwan to walk with him, but then he was just gone,” says the resident.
“A couple of hours later, the people living in Craig Street found Quwan.
“That guy is known for being violent and robbing people in their homes for drug money.
“He has poisoned dogs, tied people up and robbed people in the street with his girlfriend and the children are scared of him. Since Quwan died, he is nowhere to be found.”
Police spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Andrè Traut, confirms the case and says the circumstances around Quwan’s death are being investigated and no arrests have been made.
On Wednesday afternoon, children marched through the streets of Eureka Estate demanding the alleged killer be caught, while Quwan’s family plans his funeral.
“I am heartbroken. He was my eldest child and didn’t do anything to anyone. I don’t know why he was killed, but we are trying to stay strong until the truth comes out,” adds Joyce.
