The Independent Police Investigative Directorate is looking into an incident where cops shot and wounded a 16-year-old boy who allegedly opened fire on officers.
The teen is allegedly a member of the Derwen kids gang in Hanover Park.
On Tuesday cops were responding to a call that a gunman had fired shots near Mentz Court.
Police say the teen was found in possession of a stolen firearm and is expected to face charges.
The boy’s family is apparently angry that cops did not fire a warning shot first.
“But when the police got there they were shot at, so how could a warning shot be given?” says a cop source.
“The gunshots from the
gunman hit the police van’s windscreen and the fender. A firearm was also recovered.”
Gunman hit the police van’s windscreen and the fender.
A family friend claims it was skollies and not the teen who shot at the cops.
“The police must check the ballistics and they will see it is not that gun which the teen had that was used to shoot at them,” says the friend.
The teen’s family was not available for comment despite several visits to their home.
Ipid spokesperson, Sontaga Seisa, says: “Ipid confirms that we received a discharge of police firearm at Hanover Park on Wednesday.
“The victim is being medically treated and investigations are continuing.”
