A police officer shot and killed a man who tried to kill him inside his home.
A second attacker was shot and injured and is recovering in hospital under police guard.
Xavier Ruiters, 19, was shot dead by the police constable as he and a 27-year-old accomplice allegedly tried to break into the cop’s house in Greenlands, Bellville South on Friday.
According to police sources, the officer acted in self-
defence when he shot and killed Ruiters.
The injured accomplice was taken to Tygerberg Hospital via a private car.
According to a police source the suspects are gangsters who targeted the officer at his home.
“He was off duty en die gangsters kom vir hom by sy huis. They wanted him dead.
“He managed to survive the attempt on his life. A lot of officers don’t.
“It is sickening, but we are ready to defend not only our communities, but also our own families,” said the angry officer.
In a similar incident on 19 August, a police officer shot and killed one of five skelms who allegedly tried to enter his home, in what is believed to be a crowbar gang attack.
The off-duty officer heard footsteps in the backyard of his Site C, Khayelitsha home and followed the sound to a room.
When he looked out of the open window, he saw four men, apparently all armed with guns and break-in implements.
One of the skelms was already inside the room.
The cop shot and killed the man and the others fled the scene.
Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) acting spokesperson, Sontaga Seisa, said he was waiting for the Western Cape provincial office for information on the latest incident.
