The vice-president of the Governing Body at Blomvlei Primary School in Hanover Park says she is gatvol of skelms who are stripping the school, leaving kids with just the barest of necessities.
Raatiqah Tagodien, 39, says diewe struck the administrative block of the school early on Monday morning, just hours after a break-in on Sunday.
She says over the past few months, the school has been broken into EIGHT times, with thieves taking the geyser, water pumps, jojo tanks, computers, internet routers, wires and any other items of value.
Thieves enter the school through the roof.
The thieves gained entry via the roof, even though there is a security guard at the school.
“We need help,” Tagodien says.
Director of Communications for the Western Cape Education Department, Bronagh Hammond, says the department has engaged with the school and it was supported by Safe Schools with a wireless alarm system, intercom system, fencing, gate motor and video intercom and is also part of the WCED’s holiday security plan.
However, according to Hammond, they received reports of two burglaries for this year.
“The school reported two incidents of burglary and vandalism for the 2019 school year thus far to our Safe Schools directorate (on 25 and 29 of July).
“With regard to the gang violence reports, the school reported 5 cases of shootings and 3 cases of gang presence in the area.”
She says the Safe Schools Call Centre alerted police of these incidents.
With regards to the burglaries, she says a Safe Schools Fieldworker visited the school to assess the damages.
“We share their concerns, as we do with many of our schools situated in areas plagued by gang violence and poverty.”
