A Lotus River couple will
finally have to let the skeletons out of their closet about why they hid their murder suspect son in a cupboard for nearly two years from cops.
More than a year after their arrests, Moegsien and Juleiga Haywood will finally plead in court on 14 November after being charged with harbouring a fugitive, their son, Ziyaad, who was wanted for a string of murders and armed robberies.
Ziyaad, who was dubbed the “closet killer”, went on the run in November 2016 and was ranked among the top 10 most wanted criminals in the Western Cape after an alleged robbery and murder spree that spanned more than two years.
He managed to evade police for years, but was caught hiding in a cupboard in his parents’ room in July 2018 by wakker Grassy Park cops who became suspicious of the locked cupboard and broke it open.
‘CLOSET KILLER’: Ziyaad Haywod.
The couple were later released on R2000 bail, but Moegsien was back in the mang earlier this year after the Hawks caught him in a sting operation in which he allegedly tried to purchase grenades, explosives and AK47 rifles.
The couple appeared in
Wynberg Magistrates’ Court on Friday and while police officers were ready to rek their bek in the witness stand about the day they arrested the trio, the matter was postponed as their lawyer needed more time to prepare for the trial.
A final postponement was set for 14 November.
Meanwhile, Ziyaad will return to the Cape High Court on 8 November for pre-trial
proceedings.
