Mystery surrounds the discovery of a burnt out body in Pelikan Park on Monday morning.
Grassy Park station commander, Colonel Dawood Laing, says officers on patrol came across the smouldering corpse near the Phumlani Village Informal Settlement shortly after 6am.
“The officers were on patrol and saw a group of people gathered on the corner of Buzzard and Kara Kara roads and when they approached, they saw the people were looking at a burnt out body,” he says.
“Initially it appeared to be a woman but when the forensics team flipped the body, a penis was visible.”
Laing says officer saw that smoke was still coming from the corpse and the City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Services were called to the scene.

“It was still smouldering and they ensured it was extinguished before it could be taken away.
“Residents could not provide any information about the possible identity of the person or what happened to him.
“There appeared to be a head wound but the cause of death will be determined during a post-mortem.
“At this stage we are unable to determine the age or race of the deceased as his body was burnt beyond recognition.
“So we have now opened an inquest docket and are calling for people to come forward with information.”
Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Sergeant Goldsmith on 073 786 9205.
