First they went on radio, then they wrote their own cookbook and won an award for it, and now these two Bonteheuwel aunties have their very own TV show.
The two aunties made history earlier this year when their book, Kook Saam Kaaps, became a best-seller on Amazon in less then a month.
And tonight, their cooking show, simply named Florri en Koelsoem se Kosse, makes its debut on DStv lifestyle channel 147, VIA, at 6pm.
Pensioners Flori Schrikker and Koelsoem Kamalie first appeared innie Daily Voice last year when they were compiling their book, slaving over pots and pans to recreate 80 of their oumas’ most-loved recipes.
The two also have a slot on Radio Sonder Grense, where they’ve been entertaining for a couple of years.
Both aunties are diabetic, and Aunty Flori actually lost a finger two days after the book’s shoot was complete.
“ Ek het my vinger afgewerk,” she laughed at the time.
They also won an award at the ATKV-WoordTROfees Awards in April in the category Gewildste Boek: Leefstyl.
Aunty Flori said yesterday they are so excited about the new television show, which is pre-recorded and will air over 13 episodes.
They started shooting two months ago at Via Studios in Sea Point.
“It’s tiring, but we love doing it,” Auntie Flori says.
“The TV show was a lot of work, but it is rewarding and an amazing experience for us.
“We are cooking some of our favourite meals on the show. But it took almost an entire day just to film one episode.”
And she says they’re getting used to being celebrities.
“We are all over and everywhere we go people recognise us. Never did we even dream we would be this successful,” says Flori.
“We are grateful to all the people who have helped us get this far and our families who have been so patient with us. It’s wonderful being successful with something that you love. I hope we can still inspire the youth out there to greater heights.”
