Seven matrics who live in Springfield Terrace in District Six were treated to a kwaai matric ball by members of Springfield Matters on Saturday.
The small District Six community is close to the heart of media personality Soli Philander and his friends who live in and around Springfield Terrace.
“Every year, within this community, the matric ball is a major event, the matrics get treated like celebrities, people come outside their homes and cheer for the matrics,” he says.
“With Covid-19, it wasn't going to happen for them this year with their schools cancelling matric balls.
“We saw how down they were and then my fellow member Sharon van Schoor said why the hell can't we just do something nice for them?
“We then planned something in the middle of the pandemic and got it all together for them on Saturday.
“The people of Springfield Matters all come together because they have that passion to work together and assist, that's how we roll here.
“The matrics get to appreciate their value and worth to their community to see how much they are appreciated and cared for.”
The pupils were greeted with cheers as they exited their homes showing off their stunning outfits.
Each pupil was sponsored with an outfit and car and whisked off to a lekker three-course meal reception, prepared by Sharon, at Extreme Kwizeen in Mowbray.
She said: “I couldn’t stand the fact that these hard-working kids would be left to remember their matric year just for Covid-19 and not a matric ball.”
The pupils had personalised cakes with their faces printed on it, made by resident Faeeza Ryklief, and DJ Uncle Cal entertained them.
