Library hero John Nicholson has received a Presidential award for embodying the legacy of Nelson Mandela.
This week, John, of Hillview was honoured with a Presidential shirt and certificate for ‘displaying Presidential Character through Endurance’.
Presidential is the brand behind the famous shirts worn by Madiba.
Desre Buirski designed over 150 shirts for Madiba and this year, celebrating what would have been his 100th birthday, Presidential is awarding 100 people who embody Madiba’s character.
Categories include compassion, endurance, leadership and bravery. Public nominations are received.
John made headlines for converting his garage into a library to create a safe haven for children.
John is expected to attend a larney VIP event later this year to join the other nominees.
“Presidential awarded 50 out of the potential 100 in July and Mr Nicholson was one of the award recipients,” Desre says.
“He received the award for the sheer strength and commitment he displayed towards providing the youth in Lavender Hill with a safe and educational space. His determination to keep the library going in the face of challenges is a source of inspiration to all South Africans.”
In April, the City of Cape Town ordered John to remove the roof of his garage as he did not submit a building plan for it.
He is now in the process of applying for a land-use permit and permission to operate his library.
A proud John tells the Daily Voice: “They (Presidential) are now an official fundraising partner of Omegaview library and I feel honoured. This is a big step for us.”
