Grandmaster DJ Ready D is a man of many talents.
The radio DJ has now also made his debut on television, in the popular telenovela Arendsvlei on kykNET.
Fans and followers were surprised to see the DJ, real name Deon Daniels, appear on the soapie last week, playing the role of a judge in the school’s B-boy competition.
With him was Mitchells Plain dance champ Kim Kassels who also made her TV debut.
Arendsvlei publicist Tarryn Jospephs explains: “In the storyline, one of the learners struggles with science and is in his matric year, so it’s quite important for him to get good marks.
“The teacher then suggested that he should take up dance as a subject. That way he will pass with flying colours.
“They then established the dance group in Arendsvlei. The dance group is practising for a B-boy competition that has amazing prizes, one of them being entry into an overseas competition. DJ Ready D and Kim Cassels are judges.
“We were looking for someone prominent in the hip hop industry and he fits in so well with the Arendsvlei community, that’s why we went with him.”
The role of the dance students are played by two actors Chad Baai and Jaydon Williams and two professional dancers-turned-actors Reece Chloe Lewis and Keanu Bergman.
Filming took place in March and Ready D says his first time in front of the cameras was a breeze, and he has new-found respect for actors.
“I had a good time making my debut on Arendsvlei,” he says.
“This is the first time in my career that I was given dialogue to fulfil an acting role, previously I was always interviewed by a presenter on all of these shows.
“This helped me to get new-found insight… I must give respect to the actors.
“I want to thank the Arendsvlei team for their assistance, hospitality and professionalism of the whole team who helped me to keep calm.”
Viewers will be seeing much more of Ready D on Arendsvlei as the B-boy competition progresses.
Ready D hosts his own radio show, The Good Vibes, on Good Hope FM, weekdays 12pm to 3pm with DJ Eazy E.
