Cape Town plays host to one of the biggest breakdance battle finals this Saturday.
After a month of searching for the hottest breakdancers in South Africa, the day of reckoning has finally arrived and Red Bull BC One will select one B-boy and one B-girl to represent South Africa at the world finals in Gdansk, Poland in November.
Red Bull BC One has been on the hunt for the best breakers who will be showcasing their moves at the national final which will be live-streamed on Red Bull TV on Saturday at 7pm.
Over the past few months, four qualifying workshops and cypher battles were held in Johannesburg, Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth), Oudtshoorn and Cape Town, and now the 20 best breakers will compete. Half of the 20 finalists are from Cape Town.
Hosted by Mel Rock, the show will be live-streamed on Red Bull TV, Facebook and YouTube for the public to watch at home.
Red Bull BC One has South Africa’s most influential voices in the local breaking space judging this exhilarating competition, being Vouks, Foxxie, Ambrose, Bear and Vee.
Vouks shared what the judging panel will be looking for on the day: “Having the moves as a breaker is a must, but what is equally important is showcasing your character, as this will make the moves stand out.
“Going into the world final, this is vitally important as a breaker as you will be competing with the best in the world. Every time you battle on the floor, dance like it’s your last dance.”
In celebration of the competition and the breaking culture, Red Bull BC One created a breakbeat track, titled Cypher.
Produced by Grand Master DJ Ready D alongside DJ Azuhl, the dynamic track features rapper Youngsta CPT and will be performed live for the very first time at the national finals.
