A new LGBTQI+ group has burst onto the scene in Cape Town and they are determined to make a change.
The Haus of Forbes in Atlantis was established by five friends in February who are determined to make a difference in the lives of those sukkeling with finding their sexual identity.
Diego April Jeffries, 25, Robin Forbes, 24, Damian Dassie, 23, Kendell Leigh Forbes, 22, and Curtis Middleton, 27, will be launching an anti-bullying campaign and create a safe space for gay youth and bring about awareness for families who may be struggling to understand their children’s sexuality.
Jeffries, an MC and singer, said the aim of the Haus was not only to be loud and proud, but to change societal norms.
“In our group, one of our members came from a very strict household and had a girlfriend to please his strict father, which drove him to the edge of committing suicide.
“Another member has been living on his own since he left school because his family does not accept his choice,” Jeffries said.
In the new year, the Haus of Forbes will be going around to schools, starting in Atlantis, on an anti-bullying campaign.
“There are so many occasions when children are being bullied at school and children face these horrible ordeals alone.
“Many turn to gangsterism and drugs. I have seen this happen with my own eyes, and in doing these awareness drives we also want to give pupils the opportunity of a safe space to project their anger and frustration,” added Jeffries.
