Cape Town musicians are banding together to raise funds for a fellow muso who lost his home to a fire in September.
Today P-fore Online, Band Aid SA and Uncle Cal along with a line-up of musicians including The Rockets and a host of DJs will be feature in a special edition of Uncle Cal’s Midweek Jazz Matazz online show between 7pm and 10pm, in aid of well known musician Ameen Levy, aka Rappin’ Donkey.
The originator of the Bruin Man Funk, Ameen also happens to be the champion of the first ever major Cape Town DJ competition held at the iconic Club Galaxy in 1979.
The “Band Aid for Ameen” event aims to raise funds for the family after a fire destroyed their Paarl home on 22 September.
Fortunately Ameen, his wife Marie, their two children, daughter-in-law and granddaughter all managed to escape the blaze unharmed.
A live Facebook video made by a friend and neighbour while the fire was still raging went viral and news travelled fast, but Ameen says that there is still lots of speculation and misconceptions around what really happened.
“The fire started with an electrical fault in the ceiling of my son and his wife’s bedroom, my granddaughter alerted my wife when she saw smoke coming from the ceiling.
“The fire rapidly spread throughout the house and we could just stand and watch as the house we have lived in for 37 years and all of our possessions were destroyed within a mere 20 minutes,” he tells the Daily Voice.
“Many memories have been built in our home and it was a home away from home for all of the musicians and DJs who over the years have walked through our doors.
“We are however blessed to have found temporary accommodation in a house belonging to my brother-in-law while we are working towards rebuilding our home.”
Calvin Peters of P-Fore Online is a personal friend of Ameen and has been rallying to help him.
