This woman was kidnapped and shot through the head, allegedly because she was a lesbian.
Shocked neighbours believe 22-year-old Nolovo Swelindawa was executed because of her lifestyle.
Her murder comes as the world shines the spotlight on abuse, with the 16 days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign currently underway.
The body of Nolovo, of Sikhumbule in Driftsands, was discovered lying on the side of Old Faure Road, near the footbridge connecting Driftsands and Khayelitsha, on Sunday.
The sales assistant stayed in a two-bedroom shack with brother Sinethemba.
Neighbours say Nolovo and her girlfriend Nqabisa Mklkatali were at home on Saturday evening.
It’s alleged that a man known to the victim forced his way into her home after breaking a bedroom window at one o’clock on Sunday morning.
He allegedly grabbed Nolovo, while Nqabisa hid.
Neighbour Thunyelwa Gxekwa says Nqabisa woke her up an hour later.
“She told me that a man they knew came and took Nolovo from the house, while Nolovo shouted, “Please don’t kill me”.
A neighbour who asked not to be named said there was still a lot of opposition against homosexual relationships in the township: “We don’t know why Nolovo was killed, but we believe it’s because she was openly lesbian.”
Nothing was stolen from the house.
Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana confirmed the murder.
