Two young men were killed in a suspected drive-by shooting in Bayview, Strandfontein, on Friday night.
A resident also escaped injury when a stray bullet ricocheted inside her home in Leander Street.
Shocked family members of the victims rushed to the scene, some collapsing and screaming.
It is believed that while the two friends, identified only as Ashton Camp and Rhys, walked down the street just after 8pm, an unknown vehicle passed by and a passenger opened fire.
The victims, aged 20 and 23 years, died at the scene.
Grieving relatives were not prepared to speak to the media at the scene.
Residents told the Daily Voice the shooting was gang-related, but this could not be confirmed.
Sandy Schuter, the chairperson of the Strandfontein Community Policing Forum, says the motive behind the shooting is not known.
The CPF has provided counselling for relatives as well as the resident whose house was hit by the stray bullet.
“The stray bullets penetrated through a resident’s house while the young lady and her family was sitting in the lounge. It missed her by inches,” explains Schuter.
“She received assistance from Emergency Medical Services.”
She says following an indicent in July in the same street, where a man was shot, police and the CPF have been talking with youth at risk about gangsterism and drugs.
“We spoke to about 7 or 8 young boys at different houses in Bayview and we warned them.”
Police spokesperson, Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana, confirms a double murder has been opened for investigation.
