Bradley Grobler was on target once again to book MTN8 holders SuperSport United a place in the September 29 final, when they will face Cape Town City in a repeat of last season’s final.
The 30-year-old scored the solitary goal in Saturday’s 1-0 semifinal second-leg win over Kaizer Chiefs at Soccer City after scoring both of Matsatsantsa’s goals in 2-2 draw in first leg last week.
Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter must be rubbing his hands in glee after watching Grobler’s 65th-minute touch and left-foot finish to seal the tie.
The hitman was also at his lethal best last week with a brilliant touch-and-swivel goal, showing the former Ajax Cape Town man’s ruthless streak.
Chiefs came into the game knowing that their two away goals had given them the edge on their home turf.
But under-pressure Amakhosi coach Giovanni Solinas’ manne couldn’t break down United’s rock-solid defence, marshalled by man of the match Clayton Daniels.
Daniels also threatened the opener after 15 minutes when he headed onto post from a setpiece.
Chiefs got to the halftime break with the tie still in their hands at 0-0, but Grobler struck to put the visitors 3-2 up on aggregate.
The Soweto giants chased the game after that with Ramahlwe Mphahlele, Dumisani Zuma and Siphelele Ntshangase all going close.
But Chiefs now remain winless in their last six matches, stretch back to their 3-0 MTN8 quarterfinal win over Free State Stars.
Coach Solinas says: “It’s a disappointment that we are not going to the final. Now we need to work hard because this season we need to win trophies.”
