The Springboks have run out of wings on their tour of Australasia and will face New Zealand with a makeshift speedster in this position.
With Sbu Nkosi already left behind in South Africa because of injury, his Sharks teammate and Springbok right wing replacement Makazole Mapimpi will join him in Durban soon after suffering a knee injury in the 23-18 defeat to Australia last weekend.
That leaves coach Rassie Erasmus with only one specialist wing in his squad - Aphiwe Dyanti.
The Bok boss, though, will not call up a replacement for Mapimpi and says of the situation: “We have a squad of 30 players here in Wellington and we’re not going to call up a replacement.
“Makazole flew back on Monday and if we call up someone in his place, he will only arrive here on Wednesday and have one training session with us.
“We have Cheslin Kolbe with us, who played a full second half last Saturday on the wing. But we have some other options as well, such as Jesse Kriel and even Lukhanyo Am, who has played some rugby out on the wing.
“We will try and pick the most experienced side for this match, with the least amount of changes.”
Balancing the experience and keeping the changes to a minimum will be Erasmus’ biggest challenge ahead of Thursday’s team announcement.
Kolbe is the least experienced in terms of international rugby, having made his debut last weekend, meaning he will in all likelihood play off the bench again.
With fullback Willie le Roux also having done some duty at right wing, this might be an option if Erasmus wants to start Kolbe at fullback.
The other option would be to play Am on the wing and keep the midfield combination of Damian de Allende and Kriel.
