Bafana Bafana boss Stuart Baxter has called up Wits striker Mxolisi Macuphu after Lebo Mothiba was ruled out by his new club Strasbourg.
And Baxter has immediately gone on the offensive against the French Ligue 1 club, who signed 22-year-old Mothiba from Lille for a South African record R135m last week.
Baxter is threatening to report Strasbourg to Fifa if they fail to produce a scan that proves the player has an injury ahead of Saturday’s Afcon 2019 qualifier against Group E leaders Libya.
He tells Kickoff: “Until we have that scan, I think the way this has gone down has been totally amateurish.
“And therefore I’m going to make a decision whether I recommend to take them to Fifa or report them for disrupting our camp.
“Or we’ll look at the scan and say it’s not worth it and let’s just get on with our life and bring someone else in.”
Bafana have moved on with Machupu, who has scored two goals in five games for the PSL-leading Clever Boys this term.
The 29-year-old will be hoping to get the nod ahead of Bradley Grobler and Percy Tau in Baxter’s attack.
Meanwhile, defensive midfielder Siphesihle Ndlovu is desperate to get to Afcon 2019 and compete for a first title since 1996.
He says: “It will take a lot of effort from us. We need to change the history and bring back those glory days. It is going to be very demanding. We will be focused and we will do whatever it takes to qualify.”
