Benni McCarthy says it’s time for his Cape Town City manne to show they mean business ahead of a tough festive run.
Kicking off a four-match run in a 7.30pm PSL clash tonight at Polokwane, City have the opportunity to make some headway up the standings.
Polokwane, currently seventh, are five points and one place ahead of the Citizens but have played one game more.
And Benni has challenged his team to get stuck in among their direct rivals and prove they are one of the big boys in South African football after slipping up following their MTN8 tournament success at the start of the season.
The Bafana Bafana legend says: “We know that this little run of games we’re facing is a big opportunity for us to make that jump, because if we don’t, I don’t think we deserve calling ourselves a top team or a team striving to be up there with the best.
“If you can’t take care of the business end of the league and the teams we are facing now – not that they’re worse off, but you have to win against teams in and around you – and with the quality of players we have, we should be winning these kind of games comfortably.”
City midfielder Thabo Nodada is expecting a testing away trip at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.
The recent Bafana call-up tells IOL:“It’s a difficult away game on a surface that requires a bit more concentration.
“Polokwane are playing really well this season and their league position is a reflection of that – but we’ve got to keep the momentum we’ve built and give it a go.”
