There is nothing but love for Bafana Bafana’s stars after they thrashed the Seychelles 6-0 for a new national record on Saturday.
Coach Stuart Baxter’s manne ran riot against the islanders at Soccer City, scoring the biggest victory by the national team, to go top of Group E in their Afcon qualifiers – a position they can consolidate with another three-pointer against the same opposition on Tuesday (2.30pm).
South Africa dominated the game from the first whistle on a rain-slicked pitch which sped up their passing game.
And they went ahead from Nigel Hoareau’s own goal, before skipper Thulani Hlatshwayo thumped home a header and Lebo Mothiba made it 3-0 before half time.
After the break, Percy Tau, Dino Ndlovu – his first in SA colours – and Teboho Mokoena completed the rout to rewrite Bafana
history after their previous best win of 5-0 over Guatemala in 2010.
And coach Stuart Baxter feels the love for his
players, saying: “Yeah, it was a very good win.
“We can get carried away with six goals and say it was a good win because we scored six goals. But I think that will be taking a lot away from the performance of players.
“To start with coming up against the ‘underestimation factor’ which has not been our strong suit, we have been working very hard this week to try and negate that.
“So, I think the way the players played, they should be congratulated maybe more than the fact that they got six goals.
“They played very well. They were disciplined, they stuck to a game plan and structure, and the players who went on they knew exactly what they needed to do.”
