Western Province have been boosted by the return of a number of Springboks ahead of their Currie Cup clash with the Blue Bulls at Loftus on Saturday.
And while the return of Damian Willemse, Wilco Louw, Sikhumbuzo Notshe and Bongi Mbonambi will be a welcomed addition, it also leaves coach John Dobson and his coaching staff with a bit of a selection dilemma.
The biggest headache is Willemse.
The hottest young flyhalf in South Africa is being used as a fullback by Bok coach Rassie Erasmus.
But with Province only having one specialist flyhalf, Josh Stander, Willemse might be called on to do duty in the No.10 jumper.
Assistant coach Dawie Snyman admits that the WP think-tank has not yet made a decision on which number Willemse will wear on his back heading into the Loftus tie.
Snyman explains: “We haven’t made that decision yet.
“The Springboks looked at him [Willemse] as a fullback and they played him there.
“We also played him at fullback against Griquas and he also played fullback last year in the final [against the Sharks in Durban]. But most of his games in Super Rugby was at flyhalf.
“We haven’t made that call yet, but we will see how it goes this week."
According to Snyman the number on the team sheet will not determine the Willemse’s output in the match.
He adds: “He is a special player, so it doesn’t matter if you play him at 10 or 15.
“What is nice of a guy that can play in both positions is that it gives you more variation in your game. You can use him in different ways.”
It would make sense for Province to play Willemse at 10, given that they have SP Marais and Dillyn Leyds – both experienced fullbacks – who can man that position.
And while Stander has done a job at 10, Willemse might just make his return to the team in that position.
