Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus is sweating on the fitness of No.8 Warren Whiteley ahead of Saturday’s Test against Scotland in Edinburgh.
Whiteley suffered a calf injury in the 29-26 win over France last weekend and was replaced at the back of the scrum by Duane Vermeulen, who moved from flank.
Should Whiteley not recover in time, it’s likely that Vermeulen will start at No.8, with Pieter-Steph du Toit possibly moving from lock to blindside flanker.
Other injury concerns for the Bok boss are tighthead props Vincent Koch and Frans Malherbe, but both are expected to be fit and ready for the weekend’s clash.
On a more positive note, lock Eben Etzebeth should be fit after missing the match against France because of an ankle injury.

Erasmus explains: “Warren has a calf injury and I would say he is doubtful for Saturday. Vincent Koch and Frans Malherbe both have some bumps and we will be cautious with them, but I think they will be fit to play.”
Of the Scots, he adds: “They employ a similar style of play to Super Rugby sides and are tactically very good. They are also not afraid to take you on from anywhere on the field.”
