Vernon Philander scored his third First-Class century on Tuesday as the Cape Cobras clawed their way back into their 4-Day Series clash with the Dolphins.
The Proteas allrounder scored 104 as he and Pieter Malan (153) helped their side to a 91-run first-innings lead on Day Two.
The Cobras resumed on Tuesday morning on 45/4 and lost Kyle Verreynne for 11, leaving coach Ashwell Prince’s manne on 65/5 - 181 runs behind with half the batting order back in the hut.
But Vern came out to join Malan for the sixth wicket and the pair dug in deep as they weathered the Dolphins attack of seamer Robbie Frylinck (3/66) and Keshav Maharaj and the conditions, with a couple of rain delays.
Malan brought up his second ton of the season in 237 balls, while Vern took 226 deliveries for his milestone as the two doggedly fended off the visitors to overturn the deficit with a 218-run partnership.
Pro was out two balls later, falling to paceman Kerwin Mungroo, before another couple of wickets fell quickly.
The Cobras will resume today on 317/8 with Dane Paterson (14*) and Tladi Bokako (0*) at the crease.
